Now Open :: Cookbook

Cookbook, the central library's cafe, opened yesterday.

Cookbook Bar & Cafe at Austin Central Library
710 W. César Chavez St.

We made a card catalog of our favorite items at Cookbook Bar & Cafe, which opened upstairs at the central library yesterday. Every menu item at the light-filled concept comes from the pages of a famous cookbook, like the Chocolate Hazelnut Tart from Anthony Bourdain's Les Halles Cookbook and the Watermelon Aqua Fresca cocktail inspired by Chez Panisse Fruit by Alice Waters.

The cookbooks on the shelves once belonged to Virginia B. Wood (the late Austin Chronicle food critic and the first pastry chef at Fonda San Miguel)—glance through one while you wait for your order from the open-kitchen concept, flanked by locally-sourced white oak and vintage volume wallpaper. Take a local beer to enjoy on the deck overlooking Lady Bird Lake, or head to the grab-and-go coffee cart on the rooftop.

Turn the page for more menu items fit for a home cook....
