Slip on your boots for a good time in Bandera, The Cowboy Capital of the World. Here’s what’s chic in the charming town that’s always worth a getaway.

EAT
Mozy to Old Spanish Trail (that’s “O.S.T.” to locals). The line is worth the wait at this 1921 gem, where you can’t go wrong with a menu that’s as big as Texas (Philly cheesesteaks to Tex Mex). Pull up a saddle stool at the bar and take in the local flavor.

Stop into The Grotto Grill & Coffee Bar for daily blackboard specials and pizzas featuring addictive dough, housemade with organic flour and Texas wildflower honey. We also love the hummus and chicken pesto pasta. (907 13th Street , 830.796.9555, lunch Tuesday – Saturday, dinner Thursday – Saturday)

Ready for a Lone Star and live music? The 11th Street Cowboy Bar features classic country on the weekends, and you can bring your own steak on Wednesday nights and ask them to grill it up.

Ask for a Bandera Royal (champagne with pomegranate juice) at the quaint Mulberry’s Wine and Cheese Bar. They’ve got a big city wine list with none of the attitude and high prices.

SHOP
Slip into some "cowboy couture" and take in the cap gun collection that hangs from the ceiling at Gunslinger, a ranchwear store that features unique jewelry and home goods, too. There’s always something cold in the fridge, which is reason enough to stop in, and you’re sure to walk out with a beautiful treasure.

Art-meets-retail at Cowboy Caliente, the festively colored gallery featuring folk art, handmade jewelry, custom cowboy boots and gourmet food items. You’ll find it across the street from Gunslinger, their sister store. (1102 Cypress Street, open daily from 10 a.m. – 5:30 p.m., 830.796.7802)

STAY
Lay your head at The Mansion, a stately historic structure that’s been converted to luxe guest quarters, and take in some of the best of Hill Country surroundings.
